RELAY makes story games where you learn to work with AI by creating something of your own.
Talk to your guide in everyday language. They introduce the world, set challenges, and help you move forward. You suggest ideas, see what happens, and refine the details.

04 / How to play
Your way into the game
Start with three simple steps.
What you’ll need
The ChatGPT/Codex desktop app, a ChatGPT/Codex subscription, and about 30 minutes to spare.
The game is free. Your AI access and limits depend on your plan. Image generation isn’t available on Free. OpenAI plan details ↗
Put the README in a folder
Download the game’s starter file and save it in a new folder called RELAY DAY. Add that folder as a project in the app.
Meet your guide
Open a new chat in the project and say hello. Then reply in your own words.
I’ve never used AI. Can I play?
RELAY Day introduces the format from the very first step. Talk to your guide in everyday language, suggest ideas, and follow the challenges. You don’t need to code or learn prompts beforehand.
Is it really free?
RELAY Day itself is free. Creating your pet requires a ChatGPT/Codex subscription. Features and limits depend on your account and plan; image generation isn’t available on Free.

These RELAY Day instructions use the ChatGPT/Codex desktop app with access to a project folder. You can browse this page on your phone and come back to play on your computer.
How long does it take?
Allow 30–45 minutes. AI may spend about 15–30 minutes of that time creating your pet. The timing depends on your idea and the service. While it works, explore the AI tips in the Handbook you receive during RELAY Day.
What kind of pet can I make?
You invent the character: an animal, a fantasy creature, or an object brought to life. Choose something that interests you. Your guide helps you describe the idea and create a pet for ChatGPT and Codex. Balloon Dog is one RELAY example, rather than a ready-made character for every player.
What if I get stuck?
Type “Поднять Маяк” (“Raise the Beacon”) in the game chat. If you need help starting the game or using the app, email support@relay-project.com.
What happens after RELAY Day?
You keep the pet you created and your first taste of RELAY. Day introduces the main story. If you’d like to continue and build more ambitious projects with AI, move on to The First Signal.
